![]() I first discovered pottery and fell in love with clay when I was 18 years old. At the time I was a freshman in college and it was not long before I began to shape my life towards a career in ceramics. After college, I moved to Philadelphia to join The Clay Studio, a group of professional potters sharing facilities. During that time I also sought out the artists whose work most fascinated me – Warren Mackenzie, Harry Davis, Paul Soldner, William Daley, Ruth Duckworth, Donald Judd, and David Davison. As their guidance developed my technical facility, I reshaped my notions of the art I wanted to make and the life I wanted to live. I began a two-year apprenticeship with David Davison, a potter and teacher at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and I collaborated extensively with the painter Harley on new forms and surfaces. I also joined with other potters to design and build a number of stoneware kilns, including one at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine. In 1980, I met my wife Paula, and we established Breuer Pottery studio and gallery in Oberlin. We renovated an old Ohio farmhouse and built our studio and stoneware, raku, and earthenware kilns. More recently my work has focused on large salt glazed stoneware tile landscape series, large-scale pots, miniatures, and plates, platters, bowls, and teapots for everyday culinary use. I have also curated exhibitions of pottery and paintings, presented lectures on inspiration, and led creativity workshops for both children and adults. Paula and I welcome visitors to Breuer Pottery studio and gallery, and we are open most days from 10am to 6pm. |
